Do nail polishes carry fungus?

A toe nail fungus can live between the nail plate and polish. Polish should be discarded after use on infected nails, as there has not been any medical study to guarantee that an organism cannot live in that environment. If you have a fungal infection, applying a coat of plish may trap unwanted moisture and worsen the infection.

How are nail drills supposed to be cleaned?

It depends on the type of drill bit. If it is a rock bit (usually white or pink) or a sandpaper type, it should be thrown away after each client. If it is a metal bit, it is to be sanitized in hospital-grade disinfectant between clients. You should always see the operator change the drill bit before they use it on you.

How is P.O.M.P. different?

Our office is different in many ways. We autoclave our instruments just as they do in a hospital; this sterilizes, not sanitizes, our equipment. Everything else is disposable. To apply polish, we use disposable cups and brushes, making sure there is no chance for cross contamination. All files are thrown away or given to the client to take home with them, ensuring that nothing is every used on anyone else. We use a liner for the foot baths - there are no jets to worry about.

As far as procedures go, we offer the same types of nail services as other salons. We offer regular, spa, and paraffin manicures and pedicures as well as acrylic and gel nails. We now offer services only available in a doctor's office - foot facials and chemical peels for those with extremely thick calluses, as well as Keryflex nail restoration system.

Can a manicurist or nail tech use a credo blade to take down calluses?

No: tools that use razor blades may ONLY be used by a doctor.

Should I shave my legs before a pedicure?

You should never receive a pedicure if you have shaved your legs within 24 hours of receiving the service. This will help prevent the contraction of any bacteria. Always ask if the footbath is disinfected between clients. For example, the mycrobacterium Fortuitum leaves permanent scars and can be very painful.
